Green Roofs

A Green Roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with soil and vegetation. Green roofs increase wild life habitat in heavily built up areas, like super big cities. Green roofs also filter pollutants and heavy metals out of rain water, reduce storm water run off, and creates a cooler (sometimes warmer if encased in glass) warmer environment. And to top it off, these environmentally friendly roofs are just plain cool to look at.

Green roofs are nothing new. It's an old tradition that is still carried on in some communities such as say.... the Faroe Islands!

However, green roofs are becoming more and more popular in metropolitan areas. Check out the photos I found below. Aren't they fantastic?

Green Roof in Italy from Sally in Italia

Green Roof in Tokyo from EcoUrbanist

Green roof in New York from sssuzun

ACROS Fukouka in Japan from Greenpacks

Green roof in Chicago (city hall, I think?) from inhabitat

Green roofs sprouting up in Stuttgart, Germany from National Geographic

And in London too! National Geographic

Green roofs are also sprouting up on bus stop roofs! National Geographic

I think, had I the money, I would definitely have a green roof!

I really want a green roof. We don't have anything interesting like that where I live...just regular roofs. A green roof would truly spruce the entire area up!
